KEWANEE — OSF HealthCare has joined the list of companies offering their workforce another layer of support.

In January, OSF HealthCare added an employee assistance program as part of the company’s “Total Rewards.” The new program is designed to help OSF staff  deal with the stresses of the pandemic and make other aspects of employees' lives a little easier as well.

Through partnership with ComPsych,  the healthcare company offers OSF HealthCare Guidance Resources for their employees. The list of tools available to OSF employees now include confidential counseling, interactive digital tools, help with financial issues, legal support and online will preparation.

ComPsych is described as a pioneer in their field and the world’s largest provider of employee assistance programs. The company serves more than 53,000 organizations and 118 million individuals throughout the US and 170 counties.

Colleen McReynolds, media relations coordinator with OSF, said the new resources have been added as part of the company’s reward program that was implemented several years ago.

McReynolds explained employees with concerns can call or go online to receive customized recommendations for services or online tools and support. Under the program, OSF mission partners and their dependents can receive confidential short-term counseling services for a number of stress-related issues including martial, relationship or family problems, depression, substance abuse or  job-related stress.

Subset resources include help with drafting wills; access to a certified public accountant and even legal support. McReynold said legal support includes a free 30-minute consultation with a local attorney along with a fee reduction  if the mission partner chooses to hire that attorney.

“I do think it’s a holistic and comprehensive approach,” McReynolds said. “It really kind of meets every aspect that includes wellness.”

McReynolds said the pandemic has caused stress for their mission partners and OSF is concerned about the long-term impact on mental health and well-being. Healthcare workers have been hit especially hard.

The frontline workers, even early on in the pandemic, “on average, reported enough depressive symptoms to be diagnosed with clinical depression,” according to an OSF report. By rolling out these new resources, the hope, McReynolds said, is to provide OSF employees with meaningful tools designed to reduce stress and anxiety.

The company’s employee-centric focus has earned OSF recognition. Just last year, OSF was named by Forbes Magazine  one of the best employers for women in the country. For the last several years, OSF has  earned the title of one of the best employers in Illinois by Forbes.  OSF employs nearly 24,000 people in 145 locations and includes hospitals throughout Illinois and Michigan.
